We’ve been digging deep into the SEO of Fandom and Gamepedia over the last two years. For now this only impacts the domain, and is separate work to the design changes that will come in the next phase of the Unified Community Platform (UCP), some of which we’ll start to cover at the end of this announcement. To confirm the expected scope of the SEO impact, including its impact on incoming traffic, we will be doing a test migration of a few dozen wikis in a few weeks. Migrating the domain is an action we are taking to resolve the risk, preempt future losses, recover some of that lost visibility, and then perhaps even grow the discoverability of your content on Gamepedia. With an average of four changes per year, the total annual loss of visibility for Gamepedia wikis is staggering, making it harder for your content on Gamepedia to find an audience. On average, each change Google has made has reduced visibility for Gamepedia wikis by up to 10%, while boosting Fandom wikis by up to 18%. This affects how readers, as well as future editors, find your wikis. Over these two years, changes to Google’s algorithms-meaning, the secret sauce Google uses to determine how pages show up and rank in their search results-have negatively affected Gamepedia’s search engine optimization (SEO). I know this is a big change, but that search result visibility makes it a necessary one. There are a number of reasons for this, but one of the primary ones is to ensure that Gamepedia wikis and the hard work editors put into them continue to rank well in search results.

After nearly two years of working together to bring Fandom and Gamepedia wikis onto one platform, we will be starting to migrate all Gamepedia wikis to a domain in early 2021. Please whitelist the wiki to fix the bug with your browser.

If you are seeing blank wikis on Firefox or using Ghostery, those are caused by that software and not something we can fix on the server side. Spambot IPs tend to change quite frequently, so blocks are minimally effective.Update on how our initial test went can be found here

If edits get past the abuse filters that reference external websites, or things clearly unrelated to the game, and are clearly the work of spambots, globally block them for a few days and let your wiki manager know so that they can update the local or global abuse filters as appropriate. As with other types of blocks, progressively longer blocks are appropriate if the behavior continues after the expiration of the initial block.

If the behavior continues, a 1-3 day block is appropriate.

If a user is creating unnecessary disruption with their edits, or engaging in behavior that is otherwise disruptive (personal attacks, intentional addition of misleading, or erroneous information, continuing to argue after consensus has been reached, etc.) the first step should be engaging with them on their talk page. After the initial block has expired, if the behavior continues, progressively longer blocks are appropriate, with a reminder warning on the user's talk page. If the behavior continues, a one-day block is appropriate. If a user is making edits that violate any written policy of the wiki, including copyright violations, the edits should be reverted and a warning posted on the user's talk page, explaining the violation (including a link to the specific policy). This is true for both registered and unregistered users. If they come back after the block has expired and continue, progressively longer blocks can be applied, but in every instance a warning should be given on their talk page.

If the user persists in their behavior, applying a 1-day block is appropriate for a first offense. If a user is creating nuisance vandalism, inserting random words or phrases, using unnecessarily offensive terms, etc., the first step should be reverting the edit, followed by a warning on their talk page.
